Faculty of Machine Manufacturing and Industrial Management,

Gheorghe Asachi Tehnical University of Iasi, Romania

Department of Manufacturing Engineering

The activities of the Manufacturing Engineering Department from the “Gheorghe Asachi” Technical University of Iasi, Romania – develop in a building placed in the south-east zone of the Iasi city, on the left bank of the river Bahlui. The department was founded in 1964, aiming to coordinate the didactic activities for two studies programmes: machine manufacturing technology and agricultural mechanics.

Nowadays, the department coordinates the didactic activities for the following studies programmes: – license programmes 1. Machine manufacturing technology; 2. Welding engineering – master studies programmes 1. Engineering and management in machine manufacturing; 2. Production management and technology; 3. Advanced manufacturing technologies; 4. Industrial Entrepreneurship.

Eight professors from the department can coordinate the doctoral activities in the field of industrial engineering. The department includes laboratories specific to the manufacturing technologies: machine manufacturing technology, cold pressing technology, welding technologies, non-conventional technologies, fine mechanics technology, technologies for flexible systems, automation and robotization of the production processes, computer aided technological design etc. The research activities developed in the department refers to aspects specific to the manufacturing technologies.

The department of manufacturing engineering is a component of the Faculty of Machine Manufacturing and Industrial Management; Partial view of the university library about 1100 students yearly attend the didactic activities of this faculty. The department developed collaboration relations with many universities, industrial enterprises and research institutes from Romania and from abroad. Together with the Department of Machine Manufacturing Technology from the Technical University of Moldova (Chisinau – Republic of Moldova), the department of Iasi yearly organizes international conferences (alternatively, in Iasi and Chisinau) where the results of the research activities are presented.

The Faculty of Machine Manufacturing and Industrial Management

The Faculty of Machine Manufacturing and Industrial Management is one of the main faculties of the university. The faculty includes five departments: Department of Physics, Department pf Theoretical Mechanics, Department of Machine Manufacturing Technology, Department of Machine Tools, Department of Fluids Mechanics. More than 100 teaching didactic staff and more than 30 technical administrative staff work within the faculty. About 1100 students attend the didactic activities (license studies programmes, master studies programmes, doctoral studies programmes). The general departments of physics and theoretical mechanics develop also didactic activities for other faculties of the university.

Gheorghe Asachi Technical University of Iasi, Romania

The first attempt to set up a form of higher education in the region of Moldova took place in 1562 when the Latin School in the village of Cotnari, near Iasi was founded. But it was only in 1813 when the scholar Gheorghe Asachi founded the first school for surveyors and civil engineers. This school can be considered the nucleus of the technical higher education in Moldova. Later on, the school is developed within the Michaelian Academy (1835), and afterwards within the University of Iasi, established in 1860.

On 7 November 1912, as a consequence of the new internal law of the Faculty of Sciences within the University of Iasi, an independent section of higher education – for the electro-technical, the applied chemical and the agricultural sciences – was set up. This event represents what may be called the birth certificate of what later became The Polytechnic Institute of Iasi.

In March 1937, when the Parliament of those times voted the Law of Education, the technical higher education is transferred to the new established Polytechnic School which was, at that time, the only higher education institution qualified to issue engineers’ diplomas. As a natural consequence of the development of the engineering school in Iasi, the new institution took from the very beginning the name of Gheorghe Asachi, the founder of the Romanian technical education.

In 1948, by the reform of education The “Gheorghe Asachi” Technical University of Iasi, Romania was set up, its name being changed again under a new reform of education when, on 17 May 1993, it became The “Gheorghe Asachi” Technical University of Iasi, Romania. After a series of internal reforms, The “Gheorghe Asachi” Technical University of Iasi has 11 faculties.

The “Gheorghe Asachi” Technical University of Iasi, Romania has a central library including more than one million volumes of Romanian and foreign technical books, periodicals, collections of standards and inventions descriptions. The activities concerning the national and international conferences, meetings with personalities of the scientific, cultural and politic fields, presentations of the doctoral thesis, conferring the titles of Doctor Honoris Causa of the university develop in a beautiful great amphitheater.
